About Us

The Abnormal Smear and Colposcopy Unit (ABSU) was developed by the late Dr. Stephen Broe and Dr. Bruce Ward to provide easy access to experienced, professional care for women with abnormal cervical smears (Pap smears) or those who are thought by their GP's to have symptoms or signs which give concern that they may be at risk of genital cancer. The Unit was developed to address the problems of waiting times for assessment and treatment of women and to provide personal continuity of care. Because we are able to treat most women outside hospital in our purpose built facility there is equal access for uninsured and insured patients. This approach also provides significant cost savings to the community at large.

The Abnormal Smear and Colposcopy Unit (ABSU) is located in the Mater Medical Centre and has resolved the concerns of over 900 patients to date.

Dr. Broe graduated from the University of Queensland in 1984 and trained as an Obstetrician and Gynaecologist in Queensland and in the UK. He held public hospital appointments in the Mater Adult and Mater Mother's Hospitals and worked in private practice at the Mater Medical Centre and as a VMO at the Mater Private Hospitals and Greenslopes Private Hospital. Dr. Broe died accidently on 28^th March 2005.

Dr. Ward graduated from the University of Queensland in 1975 and trained in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in Sydney, Adelaide and London prior to advanced training in Gynaecological Oncology at St. Bartholemew's Hospital, London. While there he completed a Ph.D. through the University of London in the field of immunology of cancer. Following 10 years as Professor of Gynaecological Oncology at the University of Queensland, with public hospital appointments at the Royal Women's and Mater Public Hospitals, he is now in private practice in Gynaecology and Gynaecological Oncology.

Referral

Women can be referred by GP's, women's health, sexual health and family planning clinics and by gynaecologists. Under Medicare regulations all women need a current referral to be eligible for Medicare rebates.

ABSU undertakes to see women quickly (within 48 hrs if required) and will have diagnosis and treatment completed within a week in most cases. We recognise that the uncertainty surrounding the finding of an abnormal smear is distressing and anxiety provoking and believe that rapid resolution of the problem is the best way to alleviate this.

Women referred to ABSU will only see one doctor throughout the course of their treatment unless exceptional circumstances arise.
